244 - 247 AD
BI Tetradrachm. Antioch mint. Rare Fourth Consulate, Struck AD 249.
28mm 11.59gm (Larger than a U.S. Quarter which is 24mm and only 5.7gm).
Obverse: AVTOK K M IOYΛI ΦIΛIΠΠOC CЄB, radiate (crowned), cuirassed bust right; seen from the front.
Reverse: ΔHMAPX ЄΞOVCIAC VΠATO Δ, ANTIOXIA / SC, eagle standing right, holding wreath in beak, with wings spread.
Ref. Prieur 448. VF, typical minor porosity--much nicer in hand as images truly need to be redone. Scarce ~ Only 22 in Prieur
Early Christian writers maintain that Philip was the first Christian emperor (& Otacilia
the 1st Christian Empress), an assertion which is indeed supported by some of his actions
& made more likely as he came from an area where large numbers of Christians were
found-born in small Arabian town called Shahba (El-Leja in southwest Syria)--hence, the nickname "the Arab", 45 miles southeast of
Damascus in Trachonitis.
