Early Mansfield Pa RPPC postmarked 1908, undivided back. Visible in the photo is the M.H. SHEPARD CLOTHIER. Mr Shepard was a prominent business man during his era in Mansfield. I am attaching the obituary of Mr. Shepard which was found on the web. You can also find a photo of him, to put a face with the story. Published by Bates.
M. H. SHEPARD (SRGP 18305) died THIS MORNING Morris H. Shepard, dean of Mansfield business men, diedat his home on Elmira Street, at 12:55 this morning. Death was caused by a heart trouble with which he had been afflicted for several years. Morris H. Shepard was born June 26, 1867, near Elmira, the son of Dayton and Angeline Garrison Shepard. He came to Mansfield when he was eighteen years old and attended school here, while working in the store of D. H. Pitts. Later he and M. Schipbanker engaged in the clothing and tailoring business in the block now occupied by his store and that of Palmer Bros., on the site of the old hotel which had burned the fall previous. He has since been engaged in the He has since been engaged in the was for a time a partner with Frank Baxter in the clothing business in Ithaca, N. Y. (mis-print) Mr. Shepard was identified with many activities in Mansfield, including the old Hook and Ladder Company and other organizations of the nineties. He was for many years member of the board of trustees of Mansfield Normal, part of the time serving as vice president and secreatry. He was president of the Grange National Bank and served eight years on Mansfield Borough Council. In Masonic circles, he was a member of Friendship Lodge, F. & A. M., Williamsport Consistory and the Shrine at Wilkes-Barre. He was also one of the organizers of the Corey Creek Golf Club and while his health permitted enjoyed playing there.
He had been a member of the Baptist Church for many years,and served in various capacities in that church. He was married July 4, 1891,to Flora Richmond, of Mansfield. To them was born a daughter, Ivah, now Mrs.Edward Walton, of Merchantville, N. J. Besides his wife and daughter, heis survived by two grandsons, Edward Francis and Morris Shepard Walton, threesisters, Miss Nettie Shepard, of Mansfield; Mrs. Lottie Smith, ofChandlersburg, and Mrs. Nana Ayres, of Millerton; and one brother, WilliamShepard, of Elmira. "Mort" Shepard, as he was familiarly known inthis community, filled a valued place in the life of our town. He was aprogressive and energetic business man, and a sympathetic and friendly citizen.He supported every worth while activity, and gave freely of his time whenevercalled upon. He was a devoted husband and father, and found great happiness inhis grandsons. He had been in continuous business in Mansfield the longest ofany firm now in business, and during that time had made a good reputation forhimself by his desire to treat people right. The funeral will be held from hislate home Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., with the Rev. D. J. Griffithsofficiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Prospect Cemetery, with Mansfield Masons in charge of the committal.
