C. W. Marwedel was founded in 1846 by its namesake. Marwedel had immigrated to San Francisco, California in 1856 and opened his shop there which originally specialized in optical and electrical devices. Over the years, Marwedel expanded his stock to carry a wider range of machine tools and supplies. In 1928 or 1929, Marwedel moved the business to Oakland. Marwedel made it through the Great Depression and World War II but eventually sold his store to Gerrit Supply in Los Angeles in 1955.
