Hotei, The Happy Laughing Buddha

Hotei, also known as the Laughing Buddha or Happy Buddha, is a popular Buddhist deity in Japanese mythology and a symbol of good fortune, happiness, and abundance:

Origin

Hotei is based on a Chinese monk named Qici who lived in the tenth century. Qici was known for his benevolence and wisdom, and is considered an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha.

Appearance

Hotei is often depicted as a cheerful, content monk with a large belly and a big bag of alms that he carries everywhere. He is sometimes shown holding a fan, which can represent authority and the ability to grant wishes.

Role

Hotei is one of the seven Shichi-fuku-jin, or "Seven Gods of Luck" in Japanese mythology. He is believed to bring good luck, abundance, and fulfillment. In Japan, he is often depicted offering gifts of good fortune to the needy, infirm, and children.

Other names

In China, Hotei is known as Pu Tai or Budai, which means "cloth sack" monk.
