Vintage Staffordshire Style Hand Painted Porcelain COCKFIGHTING Spill Bud Vase

REPRODUCTION Piece

This vintage reproduction of a "spill vase" has a single opening in the top.  A spill vase was originally intended to hold tapers or "spills", which are thin wooden sticks or tightly curled strands of paper used to carry  flame from a fire to a combustible item, such as a candle or tobacco pipe.  Today, we can use it as a bud vase or as fabulous home decor!

This piece depicts a Colonial gentleman, in traditional attire, standing beside the trunk of a tree. The tree trunk is hollow, so as to act as a vase for spills (of for single stem flowers). Beside him, is a seated lady. At their feet are two roosters, that look like they are having a face-off with each other. The lady is holding another rooster underneath her arm. While cockfighting is veiwed as a cruel and inhumane sport today, it was a a popular pastime in England during the 18th and 19th centuries.

While this is not the original Staffordshire piece, it is a fine reproduction, with great attention to detail.

Whether displayed on a mantelpiece, shelf, or in a curio cabinet, this spill vase adds a touch of historical charm and elegance to any interior space. Its timeless appeal makes it a conversation piece and a focal point of any collection.

It measures approx. 8" tall x 4.75" W x 3" D

It is in VERY GOOD CONDITION ~ No nicks, chips, cracks, flea bites, or damage.
