The Christmas cactus, scientifically known as Schlumbergera, is a popular houseplant celebrated for its vibrant blooms that often coincide with the winter holiday season. Contrary to its name, this plant doesn't belong to the cactus family but is instead an epiphytic succulent native to the coastal mountains of Brazil.

Its defining features include flattened, segmented stems that resemble leaves and lack the spines typical of most cacti. These jointed segments give it a distinctive appearance.

During late November and December, the Christmas cactus showcases striking flowers that hang down in trumpet-like shapes, boasting hues of pink, red, white, or other vibrant shades.

To thrive, this plant requires indirect sunlight, moderate watering with soil allowed to partially dry between waterings, and well-draining soil. Propagation can be easily done through stem cuttings.

Christmas cacti are known for their longevity, often becoming cherished family heirlooms passed down through generations. They're closely related to Thanksgiving cacti (Schlumbergera truncata) and Easter cacti (Hatiora gaertneri or Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri), sharing similar care requirements but differing in stem segment shapes and flowering times.
