3 cd bundle in Very Good + condition. This Ethiopian singer Gigi (Eligayehu Shibabaw) adds her own twist on her native music with a wide variety of other genre. With her former husband Bill Laswell (Gong, Brian Eno, Fred Frith, John Horn, Ginger Baker, Material…among many others) and Chris Blackwell, she recorded Gigi. The music really defies easy categorization, but if you must, it should be World because of some strong African/Caribbean ties, with lots of deep bass dub style and contemporary jazz. It contains beautiful hypnotic sounds over a dub beat. The second cd in this bundle followed the earlier self-titled release and is called Illuminated Audio. It is an ambient dub style remix of the original done by Laswell and his then wife Gigi. Here she does mostly background, appearing and dissolving into her husband’s mix with ethereal and magical results. Original guest players Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Pharoah Sanders also make ghostly remixed appearances, their sampled solos enhanced, extended and dubbed along the way. He then contributes his own astounding baselines, constructing and deconstructing as only he can (listen to Santana on Divine Light, Marley on Dreams of Freedom, and Miles on Panthalassa) and you will know what I mean). The third cd in this bundle is the 2008 follow-up to Gigi’s breakout record, and it is called Gold & Wax. The musicians are primarily Ethiopian on this recording, but of course Bill Laswell plays bass, percussions, and guitar; and a perennial favorite of Laswell, Buckethead also plays guitar and wrote the beautiful Gomelaleye. In addition, Bernie Worrell plays synthesizer. This Ethiopian Diva continues to weave her ancestry into dub-inspired World beat jazz and electronica that demonstrates her angelic range and imagination.
