SCARCE FRENCH WWI CIVILIAN VOLUNTEERS STRETCHER BEARERS MEDAL
Awarded by the Catholic Church To Volunteer Stretcher Bearers.
"Medaille de Brancardiers"
An interesting, full size white metal medal measuring 1.1/8th inches across (29mm) and in very fine condition. It is complete with original, correct silky ribbon which is also in excellent condition.
I have had a few of these medals in my collection and all the ribbons are attached to the medal by sewn suspension on the reverse and fitted with the same sewn safety pin attachment at the top.
After continued research with other medal collectors in France, I have established that these medals were issued by some Catholic churches to parishioners who volunteered as stretcher bearers during the 1914-18 war. These were known as Brancardiers.
The Brancardiers often worked at field hospitals and just behind the lines by assisting in the transportation of wounded soldiers by stretcher.
In appreciation of their service, the church awarded these medals.
An interesting award and in very nice original condition. Fully guaranteed to be genuine and authentic.
