French Colonial Military Campaign Medal With Bar Extreme Orient (Far East).
A very collectable full size silver medal measuring 1 inch in diameter (26mm) and in very fine condition. It is complete with original ribbon which displays the bar "Extreme Orient" (Far East).
Obverse - The face with a helmeted female head facing left representing the French Republic circumscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE’, signed at the base ‘Georges LEemaire’ (sculptor and engraver, 1853-1914)
Reverse - A terrestrial globe superimposed on a military trophy of arms and circumscribed below "MÉDAILLE COLONIALE".
The medal was originally established on 26 July 1893 and awarded to military personnel who participated in operations in French colonies and protectorates. In all, there were 50 different campaign bars. It became defunct on 6 June 1962, being replaced by the Overseas Medal (Médaille d’Outre-Mer). The ‘Extrême Orient’ (Far East) bar was instituted by the decrees of 5 August 1946 and 19 July 1948 to be awarded to both military and civilians who fought agains Japanese forces between 9 March and 18 September 1945 or against ‘rebels’ after 23 September 1945.
