BING & GRONDAHL Stoneware

#7016 Figurine “AFRICA”

Large BING & GRONDAHL (B & G) stoneware figurine of an African Man in a patterned long tunic and hat, designed by Tut Fog. Beautifully detailed in the best Bing & Grondahl tradition. Approximately 21 inches (53 cm) tall, 8 inches (20 cm) wide and 8.5 inches (22.5 cm) deep. Large, impressive and heavy. Appropriately marked on the bottom, including the three tower trademark of Bing & Grondahl; the figurine number 7016; and the initials TF for the sculptor Tut Fog.

THIS exact figurine appears on Page 205 of the book BING & GRONDAHL Figurines (©2002) by Caroline and Nick Pope. The Popes visited me while collecting material for their book and took many photos of unusual items in my collection, including this figurine, plus most of the figurines on page 217, and all the figurines on page 218, among others. All the figurines on page 218 are literally “unique” (meaning only one was ever made), and I believe this #7016 is probably also unique. I purchased all of these when I was given a private tour of the B&G factory after it had closed, following the merger of B&G with Royal Copenhagen in 1987. NB: The size for this figurine in the Popes’ book is incorrectly listed at 30 cm; actual size is 53 cm (21 inches).

EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, repairs or other defects), and FIRST QUALITY (no scratch through the trademark).
