Nearly 120 representative works provide an overview over the rich paintings collection in the Palace Museum in Weimar. A large portion of the older works can be traced back to the collection of the former Grand Dukes of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Further acquisitions were made by Goethe upon request by his patron. In the early 2th century the collection was enlarged by the addition of outstanding contemporary works through Count Harry Kessler. The book ends - and provides an outlook into the future - with the presentation of the collection of the Cologne gallery owner Paul Maenz which will in future be shown in the Landesmuseum  (County Museum)/ The collection ranges from a unique collection of icons to major works in the Cranach Gallery, Netherlandish art, Classicism and the German Romantic movement which is prominently represented by works by Angelika Kauffmann, Caspar David Friedrich, Georg Friedrich Kersling and Philipp Otto Runge. Further emphasis is layed on important works by the Weimar Art School as on Modern art of the early 20th century,
