I Am the Virgin Mary – 8.5x11 – by Kay Nielson

A student of Art Nouveau, Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) was one of the great illustrators of the 20th Century. The maker of numerous books, he also did art work for Disney movies and was the art director for the haunting closing scenes of Fantasia, including the Ave Maria candlelight procession. But some say his greatest work was from his 1914 East of the Sun and West of the Moon, an illustrated book of folk tales. This picture is from “The Lassie and Her Godmother,” a fable with a moral about a woman who has lost her three children. In the climax of the story, she finds out that Mary, the Queen of Heaven, has been caring for them and protecting them when she couldn’t. “Here are your children.
