COVER: The Spirit Lives! 1984 Summer Olympics. Hogshead, Miller,. Louganis, Moses and Vidmar.
Cover: Photo by Wally McNamee.
TOP OF THE WEEK:
THE SHINING GAMES OF SUMMER: A RESURGENCE OF THE SPIRIT: From the triumph of Carl Lewis to the tragedy of Mary Decker, the XXIII Olympiad scored a 10 for moments etched in time. As week two saw athletes from around the world adding welcome spin to the American dominance, the Games closed amidst a new Olympic spirit, with the biggest award of all perhaps owing to the host city of Los Angeles. Who could ask for anything more? But as America's newest celebrities, gold-medal winners like sprinter Evelyn Ashford (left) and diver Greg Louganis (right), ponder new careers and lucrative endorsement deals, some corporate sponsors may go home wondering whether they got their money's worth by investing millions in the most commercial Olympic Games ever.
JACKIE PRESSER IN THE HOT SEAT: Since he took the wheel of the scandal-scarred International Brotherhood of Teamsters more than a year ago, Jackie Presser has expanded membership and drawn on his close ties to President Reagan to try to give his union a shiny--and honest--new image.
SWEEPING TROUBLED WATERS: An international force of ships and choppers set off gingerly to clear the Gulf of Suez and Red Sea of terrorist mines. It was still not clear who had planted them. The partners designed the mission to show solidarity with Egypt. But it also put the Reagan administration into choppy political waters.
THE GREAT AUGUST TAX DEBATE: Ronald Reagan suddenly found himself on the defensive just before the GOP convention. Walter Mondale pressed his complaints that Reagan has a "secret plan" to raise taxes. The president and George Bush issued testy denials--but only muddled things further.
