George, a young antiques dealer, is headed to his new house in Windermere when his motorcycle is unexpectedly damaged at a gas station by Edna, a nervous young woman en route to her sister's farmhouse in South Gate. Though obliged to give George a lift to his destination, Edna insists on meeting her sister Katie first.
Lost in the green English countryside, Edna is attacked by a wet man while George is away, getting directions from a farmer implementing new, experimental ultrasound radiation equipment to rid his crops of insects. Unbeknownst to everyone, the ultrasound tremors--which extend to a reach of one, and eventually five, miles--have begun to revive the recently dead-and-buried.
The accidental couple arrive at the farm in time to see Edna's brother-in-law Martin being killed by the wet man--a recently drowned vagrant named Guthrie--as Katie looks on, horrified. But when the police are summoned and told about the walking dead, seasoned Irish cop Sgt. McCormick (Arthur Kennedy) takes one look at George's long hair and beard, and the obvious signs of Katie's heroin-addiction, and arrives at a less outlandish explanation.
Ordered to remain in South Gate till the inquest, George and Edna are further incriminated when they are attacked by zombies in a cemetery, where a policeman is killed and various graves are left apparently vandalized--especially after McCormick finds a vaugely Satanic antique in George's possession. Meanwhile, the ultrasound penetrates the walls of the morgue at South Gate Hospital, where Edna is recovering from the attack...
