When sewing zigzag with a very short stitch length, the stitches will lie together in a tight and almost parallel orientation. The appearance is a solid band of thread and is called a satin stitch. When executed well, the effect is stunningly beautiful. To work, the feed dogs must pull the material through at just the right rate and be very consistent. If the feed is inconsistent or stops, a pile of thread builds up very quickly, ruinng the stitch, and creating a mess that will have to be cut out. This foot is designed to let the rows of stitches pass under the presser foot without touching the metal foot. This removes a major source of difficulty that commonly affects the satin stitch. In the task the foot performs quite well.
