Pregnant and penniless, Connie Doyle (Ricki Lake) is mistaken for the wife of a dead man after her train derails. Accepted into the Winterbourne mansion as the bride of their son, Patricia Winterbourne, Connie has to deal with a grieving mother-in-law (Shirley Maclaine) and sceptical twin (Brendan Fraser) of her 'husband'.
