Box set of 5 Robert DeNiro films. In 'Heat' (1995), De Niro and Al Pacino face off as thief and policeman, both obsessed with their professions. De Niro stars as Neil McCauley, the criminal mastermind in a gang of professional thieves (which includes Tom Sizemore and Val Kilmer), who unwittingly attract the attention of super-cop Vincent Hanna (Pacino). Hanna will not stop until he catches the gang in the midst of committing a crime, an obsession that alienates him from those he is close to. 'The Mission' (1986) is the story of the conflict between slave-traders and Jesuits during the colonisation of South America by Spain and Portugal. In 1750 Jesuit priest Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) arrives in the Amazon to build a mission for the Guarani Indians. He comes into conflict with slave trader Mendoza (Robert De Niro), who kills or captures many of the tribe but escapes punishment due to the fact that he is an aristocrat. However, it transpires that even Mendoza has a conscience when he comes to Gabriel asking for penance. In 'This Boy's Life' (1993), based on the true life memoirs of Tobias Wolff, Toby 'Jack' Wolff (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a troublesome youth, bored of his school and family. Together with his mother Caroline (Ellen Barkin), he hits the road in search of a better life. Caroline finds companionship with auto mechanic Dwight (Robert De Niro), and marries him so that Toby will have a father figure. However, Dwight is a strict disciplinarian who begins to sadistically abuse his stepson. 'Goodfellas' (1990), Martin Scorsese's violent true-life gangster epic follows Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) as he rises through the ranks of the Mafia. Upon turning FBI informant to help pay for his drug addiction, Hill recalls how he got started in the Mob following the $6 million robbery of a Lufthansa cargo at a New York airport. Hill and his partners, Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro) and Tommy De Vito (Joe Pesci), went on to rise through the ranks of the Mafia over three decades, eventually eliminating Paul Cicero (Paul Sorvino), the neighbourhood godfather who originally took Hill under his wing. Joe Pesci won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In 'City By The Sea' (2001), Vincent LaMarca (Robert De Niro) is a New York police detective assigned to investigate the murder of a drug dealer, a case in which his son Joey (James Franco) soon becomes the chief suspect. When the media find out about this, they zero in on Vincent's position, emphasising the fact that his father was also a convicted killer. This news comes as a shock to his girlfriend Michelle (Frances McDormand) and she decides to leave him; meanwhile, his superiors decide that he should be suspended from the case. With his life in tatters, Vincent now decides to focus on the one thing he has left, and tries to bring Joey in safely.
