The story begins in 1909 when singing star Harriet Green (Jessie Matthews) is blackmailed by an old lover on the eve of her wedding. She goes into hiding, leaving her small daughter in the care of a maid. Twenty-five years later, the daughter is spotted in an audition. Made up to look older, she is passed off as her mother...
