Untitled (Scene Around a Pool) Lithograph by Martin Holt

Martin Holt was born in London. He graduated as an architect from University College London and studied art at the Slade School and St. Martin's School of Art. Martin came to Israel nearly fifty years ago. He started as an independent architect, but then joined with the sculptor Frank Meisler in a partnership that lasted over sixteen years, during which time their office, based in the Old City of Jaffa, designed everything from villas to factories, winning several awards on the way. The Yom Kippur war in 1973 resulted in most of their clients cancelling projects and their office had to close down. Martin then decided to go in a different direction - graphic design and illustration. For some time he worked with the legendary late Zvi Yannai, the editor of "Thoughts" for IBM. When he came back to Tel-Aviv he decided to open his own gallery and in 1984 "Shadma" opened in Tel-Aviv. He started off by showing contemporary work by Israeli artists, but morphed into a cartoon gallery exhibiting his own work exclusively. Though the gallery was a great success, it was eventually forced to close in 2003 due to the economic situation brought on by the second Intifada.  Martin has had exhibitions in many countries including, Belgium, France, Italy, The USA and Brazil. He is represented in galleries in Paris, New York, Venice and Florida. (Source:Shadma Gallery)
