Cable (Nathan Summers) is a superhero appearing in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character first appeared as Nathan Summers in Uncanny X-Men #201 (Jan. 1986).  Cable's identity was created by writer Louise Simonson and artist/co-writer Rob Liefeld and first appeared in The New Mutants #87 (March 1990). He was born in the present Marvel timeline but was sent into a distant future.

The question is whether Cable – one of the principal X-Force members – will end up being introduced in the next X-Men movie, X-Men: Apocalypse.  In the original comics, Cable was originally created in order to be sent back through time to stop Apocalypse, so it would be fitting for him to make his first appearance alongside the new antagonist.  Rob Liefeld said that while he has no idea whether or not Cable will be in X-Men: Apocalypse, “[It's] hard to believe he won’t.”

Here's your chance to own Cable's first appearance.  Near mint, 2nd print!

Josh Brolin was cast in a four-picture deal with 20th Century Fox to play Nathan Summers / Cable in the X-Men film universe, with Deadpool 2 as his first appearance. In May 2017, producer Hutch Parker discussed the future of the franchise, stating that the introduction of Cable with his time-traveling abilities makes an interconnection between the then-upcoming New Mutants, Deadpool 2, and Dark Phoenix, as well as previous films a possibility.

In his first appearance, Cable is depicted as a mysterious time-traveling soldier from a devastated future with a cybernetic left arm and eye who travels back in time to assassinate the young mutant Russell Collins before he kills Cable's wife and daughter. Deadpool forms X-Force to stop him, but both sides hit an impasse when Russell teams up with the Juggernaut. Cable decides to work with X-Force to defeat the two threats, but allows Deadpool the chance to redeem Russell before the youth becomes a murderer. Deadpool sacrifices himself when Cable tries to shoot Russell, causing the latter to reject a future as a killer, which saves Cable's family. In return, Cable sacrifices his chance to reunite with his family to save Deadpool and stay in the present.

Will Deadpool 2’s Josh Brolin Return As Cable In The MCU? Here’s The Latest

The superhero genre is showing no signs of slowing down, although certain properties have managed to stand out as fan favorites. Chief among them is Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, with fans eager to see the Merc with the Mouth back on the big screen. But will Deadpool 2’s Josh Brolin return as Cable in the MCU? Here’s the latest from the actor.

Josh Brolin recently brought two beloved Marvel characters to the big screen in Thanos and Cable. Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, fans have been wondering if/when characters from the Deadpool franchise might return to the big screen. Brolin himself recently spoke to this possibility, saying:

"Deadpool worked out very much in my favor. Deadpool was supposed to be four movies. Maybe there'll be more — I don't know what Marvel has in store — but it turned out to be one really fun movie for me."

Say it ain’t so. It looks like Josh Brolin isn’t quite sure what’s happening with the R-rated franchise and the MCU. And he seems to think that Deadpool 2 has the potential to be his first and only appearance as Cable. Although that certainly seems like a missed opportunity.

Josh Brolin’s comments come from a recent conversation with ACE Universe about his long and successful career. Eventually his Deadpool 2 role as Cable factored in, with Brolin sharing what a great time he had working on the Ryan Reynolds blockbuster. But it’s clear that the character’s future on the big screen hasn’t been decided just yet.

When Deadpool was still a 20th Century Fox property, Josh Brolin signed a four-movie deal as Cable, starting with his debut in the sequel. But the fate of Ryan Reynolds’ franchise is now in the hands of Disney. While this provides the opportunity for Wade Wilson to finally join the MCU, it’s unclear what’ll happen with others like Cable or Domino.

Just on month after playing the villainous Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and committing genocide in the MCU, moviegoers were treated to another Josh Brolin comic book role. While Cable was ultra serious and badass, the bonkers Deadpool franchise made way for plenty of hilarious moments featuring the mutant. Hopefully Brolin’s tenure playing the X-Men character isn’t already up.

Despite the countless questions fans have about Deadpool, Disney’s acquisition of Fox does seem to open more possibilities for the MCU. Namely, the shared universe can finally incorporate the X-Men and Fantastic Four. We’ll just have to wait and see if Josh Brolin’s Cable is included in those mysterious plans.
