THIS WEEK: the sinister festivities that end Verdi's Ballo in Maschera, first performed February 17, 1859, are depicted on the cover by Raymond Porter. The opera's central irony--the discrepancy between reality and appearance--is discussed by Frank J. Warnke, while Katherine Griffith points out the ways in which this has been expressed by the composer. Mrs. Matz writes of the resemblances between Verdi and Toscanini, William Ashbrook of those between Ballo and Meyerbeer's operas. A picture spread on "Mr. Opera" supplements the well-known radio voice of Milton Cross; an interview with Mrs. Lewis Douglas (page 32) throws light on an indispensable arm of the Metropolitan Opera, whose financial statistics are revealed on page 30.
