Issued weekly during the Opera Season and fortnightly in the Spring and Fall by THE METROPOLITAN OPERA GUILD 654 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK, N. Y.

THIS WEEK: the Carmen cover design is by Judy Epstein of Washington Irving High School, first-place winner on the senior level in the Guild's 1958 Art-in-Opera project. Bizet's fateful masterpiece, not broadcast last season, returns to the airwaves over the most powerful network ever to carry the Metropolitan Opera, an event discussed by Arthur Hull Hayes, President of CBS Radio. Max de Schauensee of the Philadelphia Bulletin reminisces on a famous Carmen of the past. The star of Saturday's broadcast, Rise Stevens, is interviewed with special reference to her TV career. George A. Whetstone of Texas Technological College uncovers a "rival" opera after Merimee, while pianist-composer-teacher Erno Balogh throws light on the Prix de Rome won by Bizet and his countrymen. On page 11 OPERA NEWS introduces a new feature, "A Taste for Music," a series of dishes for today inspired by the operas and opera singers of yesterday.
