Mark Waid knows almost better then any other writer in mainstream comics how to settle in on a title and celebrate the character he is writing, the supporting cast and the predominant tone that has always surrounded the characters, and celebrate the universe they are immersed in by giving winks and nods to what has come before, incorporating important landmarks or events that have happened in a universes long history in natural ways, and have guest appearances that do not feel forced or out of place and are just fun.
These deluxe hardcover collections are worth the wait, as opposed to getting the regular hardcovers or paperbacks, not only because Marvel puts more issues in them but the books are so well put together that there is no gutter loss and they stay open with ease and the extra dimensions are worth seeing the gorgeous artwork on display.
The first deluxe hardcover is a real treat as Waid did everything I mentioned previously, but also took a slight detour from the usually grim and brooding world of Daredevil. He incorporated some fun in it. He added some swashbuckling savvy into Matt Murdock/Daredevil that adds more dimension to the character and the series. The previous collections did a wonderful job of setting up Waid's take on the man without fear's world and having some wild adventures. There is still one big conspiracy that lay unsolved that goes back to the first issue. Waid even has the audacity to hit one of Matt/Daredevil's closest friends and allies with a terminal illness which is handled so well and is utterly heartbreaking.
Waid even finishes on high note as an enemy thought dealt with rears it's ugly head and pushes Daredevil to near madness as he makes some jaw dropping decisions that not only affects his life and status quo but the series as a whole.
Hey, a tremendous shout out to illustrator Chris Samnee and colorist Javier Rodriguez. Samnee uses a minimal amount of lines but uses them to great effect and portrays some amazing sequences of action to the emotionally heartbreaking scenes between two people. Samnee almost does every issue but is filled in by his amazing colorist Rodriguez who is quite a darn good illustrator himself.
A great format for Mark Waid's initial Daredevil run complimented with some fabulous art. I hope they keep releasing Waid's current All-New Marvel Now run is these deluxe hardcovers because there really is no better way to go.
Marvel Confirms Daredevil Is MCU Canon
An updated Marvel timeline for Matt Murdock/Daredevil from the Defenders shows confirms his solo series is canon to the MCU.
UPDATE: Marvel has removed the paragraph about Matt Murdock's appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home from his live-action biography detailing his television history. The original story can be found in full below.
It's official -- Daredevil is canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
After actor Charlie Cox reprised his role as Matthew Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans questioned whether or not this was the same version of the character seen across all three seasons of the former Netflix series, or another variant for the MCU. Thanks to Marvel's website, fans now have their answer. An updated biography for Murdock's live-action timeline connects the dots between Daredevil Season 3 and No Way Home.
Towards the bottom of the biography, the second-to-last paragraph summarizes the ending of the show's final season, discussing the funeral for Father Lantom and Murdock making amends with his friends, Franklin "Foggy" Nelson and Karen Page. However, another paragraph has been added to summarize his brief appearance towards the beginning of No Way Home. The paragraph reads as the following:
Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker, as Peter had been publicly outed as Spider-Man and accused of Mysterio's murder. Though Peter was legally cleared of any wrongdoing, Matt warned him he'd still have to face the court of public opinion and advised Harold "Happy" Hogan to hire a good lawyer. As if on cue, a protestor threw a brick through the window of the Parkers' apartment in support of Mysterio. Fortunately, due to his heightened senses, Matt was able to catch the brick before it hurt anyone inside. When Peter asked him how he was able to do that, Matt claimed it was because he was a really good lawyer and left it at that.
The "sometime later" appears to definitively confirm that Spider-Man: No Way Home takes place after Daredevil Season 3, or at the very least, this Matthew Murdock shares the same history as his television counterpart. While one question is now answered in fans' minds, more have been raised. Despite the events of Daredevil and Murdock now being MCU canon, there is no official word on whether the same goes for his Defenders teammates.
Out of the four main Defenders -- Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand/Iron Fist -- and Frank Castle/The Punisher, only Daredevil's biography is fully updated. Some of the characters' timelines cut off with the events of Defenders, and the only other later-released seasons touched upon as of writing are Jessica Jones Season 2, Luke Cage Season 2 and The Punisher Season 1. However, Daredevil's timeline does bring along Defenders into his MCU canon status.
If rumors and reports swirling about are true, Murdock's biography is going to need some more updates in the future. One report says that a reboot of Daredevil is in the works for the MCU, while other rumors claim that the character is set to appear in more than one of Marvel's Disney+ series, ranging from Moon Knight to She-Hulk and beyond. Though Murdock has yet to appear in any of these shows, Daredevil's main antagonist -- Wilson Fisk/Kingpin -- joined the MCU in the Hawkeye series. Fisk's biography has not been updated to include this though.
The entirety of Daredevil is now available to binge on its new streaming home, Disney+, along with all the other Defenders series. Spider-Man: No Way Home is available on digital now and Bluray.
