THIS WEEK our cover picture is derived from a photograph taken by Erica Mending last summer in Venice from the portico of the Pescheria or Fish Market (1907) on the Grand Canal, opposite the ce d'Oro (1440), scene of the third act of La Gioconda. We are glad to bring our readers local reports of recent opera seasons in Toronto and San Antonio, Texas, remote points on the map but closely connected by their interest in the lyric stage. Genia Foresta, who writes of her former teacher, Jean de Reszke, prepared this article for the great tenor's centenary celebration at the Opera House. We publish it in memory of the thirtieth anniversary of his death, next week. Evelina Colorni, a member of the Juilliard School faculty, is recognized as an authority on Italian diction. Her experience has led her to the convictions outlined in her article on bel canto which we publish in this issue.
