THIS WEEK: our cover picture represents a portrait of Hans Sachs by one of his contemporaries, the Swiss artist Jost Amman, 1539-1591, and was discovered in the Print Collection of the N. Y. Public Library. Three educators contribute to the exposition of Die Meistersinger in the current issue. Philip Keppler, Jr. teaches a course in Nineteenth-Century Opera at Smith College; Paul Nettl is Professor of Musicology at the University of Indiana and Katherine Griffith is Instructor in Music at Earlham College. Frank Merkling, who discusses the third-act prelude, is now in his second year as a member of OPERA NEWS' staff.
