PICTURE OF THE WEEK: Chalmette High School, in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, lost much to Hurricane Katrina, including its
collection of every issue of LIFE, dating back to the first:
November 23,1936. Last month, First Lady Laura Bush, a former librarian, visited the school, pledging $500,000 from her foundation to help rebuild the library and others in the region. She was accompanied by Ann Moore, the chairman and CEO of Time Inc., LIFE's parent company, who made a pledge of her own: to replace the back editions of LIFE and to supply Chalmette and additional area schools with current magazine subscriptions. Seen above are, from left, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, St. Bernard Parish superintendent of schools Doris Voitier, Bush, and Moore. PHOTOGRAPH BY MARIO TAMA.
DEPARTMENTS:
Weekend Life: Liev Schreiber talks about
remaking The Omen with horror-flick
veteran Mia Farrow; turn your house into a dog-
friendly home; test your real estate savvy.
Plus: An illuminating way to knit in the dark.
Picture Puzzle: There's something different about these buoys.
