Pleased to offer a gold gilt copper folk art weathervane galleon from mid to late 1800s. The interior tag, which we were able to fish out is signed with a name starting with C but is otherwise illegible (see photo). The directionals are Cushing and White, as shown in their circular from 1865 (see photo).
This is a unique and rare folk art weathervane. Condition appears original with no repairs and no overpainting.
The galleon has a wonderful aged patina as you can see. The gilt is in good condition for the weathervane's age. See photos for more on condition.
The weathervane has a few BB dents, bends here and there and the bow has a seam that is open and the bow has a crinkle show in the photos. Through is seam we were able to fish out a maker's tag with a name that starts with a "C" but the rest of the letters are illegible. This weathervane does not appear is any weathervane catalogue or flyer and one like it hasn't show up at auction, leaning towards this having been a custom piece, one of a kind.
The weathervane is heavier than most. The Cushing and White directionals are iron and the ball is copper. The display base is heavy wood.
