PICTURE OF THE WEEK: Back in 1991, townsfolk in Keene, New Hampshire, began displaying their carved pumpkins along the village's handsome Main Street—an impressive collection of 600 jack-o'-lanterns. "And then the thing just took off." says event coordinator Suzanne Woodward. "We now have these four 40-foot towers—it's a mile and a half of scaffolding." In 2003, the town established the Guinness World Record for the Most Lit Jack-o'-Lanterns on Display, with 28,952, and each year, the goal is to push that mark higher. The Keene Pumpkin Festival also features seed-spitting contests (a champion expulsion can travel 35 feet) and fireworks, but it's the glow from the gourds that draws people from New England and beyond--like moths to a flame.
