COVER: Lews and Clark slept here. Our Newest National Park.
ON THE COVER:
Another peaceful afternoon at Cape Disappointment in the brand-new Lewis and Clark
National Historical Park. Photographed on June 4 by Kurt Markus.

GEE, YOU SOUND FAMILIAR
"You've got mail," "Please hang up and dial again"--you know the catchphrases. Now meet the faces behind the voices. Photographs by Phillip Toledano.
LEWIS & CLARK SLEPT HERE:
LIFE's sneak peek at America's newest national park--a stunning, transcendent land where history was made. Essay by 7ane Smiley. Photographs by Kurt Markus.
PICTURE OF THE WEEK: On the set of the futuristic thriller The Island (out next week), Scarlett Johansson hops a ride on a jet-powered
motorcycle piloted by Ewan McGregor. The flying
bike isn't as far-fetched as it might seem. Island director Michael Bay heard a rumor that the U.S. military was developing just such a vehicle and, as he tells LIFE, "I thought if I could get my hands on it, that would be the coolest!" He couldn't, so he built his own. PHOTOGRAPH BY DAVID STRICK.
DEPARTMENTS:
Weekend Life: Carrie Underwood's Idol gossip; how to groom your reluctant kitty; have you played America's hottest puzzle?.
At Home: Dr. BBQ's favorite burger; create an outdoor sanctuary 18 Picture Puzzle: Which of these corporate mascots is the oldest?.
