Extremely rare first edition history of Jo Daviess County in Illinois. Handsomely published and nicely illustrated with steel-engraved portraits of county notables (including Ulysses S. Grant), many other full-page engravings, and a beautiful fold-out map of the county in color. Col. Joseph Hamilton Daveiss, was a prominent Kentucky lawyer and Indian fighter who died in 1811 while leading a charge against Indians at the Battle of Tippecanoe, in Indiana. Not sure he had anything to do with Illinois.

Brick beveled leather boards with gilt-stamped titles and black-stamped decoratives. Gray endpapers. 9.5" x 7". 845 pages + 1 page of advertising. Fold-out color map in front.
