The Mother of Our Lord – 1879 Catholic American – 8.5x11"

This is a personal favorite. Over 30 years ago, I found a framed print of this in a thrift store. Kind of faded, but I loved the composition of the picture and the sweet gentleness of Mary’s expression. It’s hung in our home off and on for our whole marriage. This is a high-resolution image we’ve restored, taking out the stains and tears and fading, making it very fresh and bright, while preserving the old-time feel. Mary is portrayed with the 2 doves for the offering at the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple.The original print was done by George Stinson & Company of Portland, Maine, and published in 1879. It is a chromolithograph, which was the new technology that allowed them to create it in color without having to hand-paint it. This was a very popular print for a long time, and it’s possible that dozens of other printers produced versions of it. If you had a Catholic grandmother in the 1880s, even into the 20th Century, there’s a decent chance she – or one of her friends – had this picture, like the one that ended up in my hands.Thank you for your interest!
