"The White Squadron's Farewell Salute to the Body of Captain John Ericsson, New York Bay,  August 25th 1890" is the full title of the painting by Edward Moran which is one of the collection of Moran marine paintings hanging in the US Naval Academy museum. The inventor of the monitor and one of the most remarkable marine engineers of all time Ericsson was born in Varmland in 1803, came to the United States in 1839, and died in New York City in 1889. The American war ship in the center of the painting is the protected cruiser Baltimore which carried Ericsson's body to Sweden.
