Before switching to a beautiful music format in 1976, WCFL was a prominent Top 40 music station in Chicago. Owned by the Chicago Federation of Labor, the station's call letters were derived from this association. WCFL served as a major competitor to WLS, another leading music station in the area. After its Top 40 days, the station went through several format changes and eventually became an all-talk station. The WCFL call letters are no longer associated with a Chicago-based station.
