George Lucas specifically wrote this film for Warwick Davis after meeting him on the set of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983). Lucas was only 17 at the time this film was made. In preparation for the movie, Davis had to learn a modified accent, how to take care of a baby, how to ride a horse, how to sword fight, and how to perform magic.
