BEN HOGAN 1,2,3,4 Woods and 1971 Round SOLE IRON SET - COLLECTORS!

Some Ben Hogan round / Bounce Sole Irons History

1971 Round Sole by Ben Hogan - this was the last of the Bounce and Round Sole Designs from The Ben Hogan Company. From there on they initiated the Apex Iron design and production lines.
This set is designed in the process where Mr. Hogan was SO close to finally design the Apex iron that would carry the company into a new era. The Round Sole is very rare and was quickly replaced in 1972 by the Bounce Sole and then reversed the weight distribution on the back and came up with the 1972 Apex that in fact was the first original Apex design that was officially introduced.
Oddly, there isn’t really much information out there in terms of 60s/70s Hogan irons. What is known is that they tend to be highly desired and fairly collectible as they are regarded as some of the best vintage forged irons of the era. It’s crazy to think how different the market was back in those days. Irons like these weren’t sold as “great ball striker, low handicap only” irons. They were just the irons the Ben Hogan Golf Company sold.
Now, the general shape of the Bounce Sole irons started appearing around 1964 with the Hogan PT-3 irons. This head profile, in my opinion, reached its pinnacle with the ’72-75 Apex irons. But in 1967/1968, the “Bounce Sole” was introduced to Hogan irons via the Plus One model. By 1969, the next generation of irons started surfacing and is often referred to as the “One Plus”, or “Bounce Sole” irons, which really became the foundation for the classic Apex iron models to follow.
For this era of golf, the Bounce Sole irons were one of the more forgiving and playable options. The sole of this club had much more camber and quite a bit more bounce than other clubs from this time period. If you look at clubs from that point in time, the Bounce Sole really should be considered a breakthrough in club design. So while the Bounce Sole “One Plus” still wasn’t exactly “game improvement”, it was more friendly through the turf. It was easier to control and make better contact in different lies. The 1972 Hogan Apex iron would continue that evolution by altering the muscle of the iron and center of gravity in such a way to allow for better trajectory control.
This set of Hogan Bounce Soles really capture a point in time, yet are totally timeless. You just can’t argue that these are a truly classic set of irons that deserve a lot of credit.
The Ben Hogan Bounce Sole 1+ irons are a beautiful forged irons for shotmakers and better golfers. They are a compact, traditional design with blade on blade design which creates thin toe line and thin top line.

REVIEW: "I picked up a set of the 1971 Bounce Soles in near great condition last summer . These irons feel like butter when well struck. Mine are different from the Bounce Sole's pictured (1968). They are basically identical to the following 1972 Apex "Classic" except for the "Bounce Sole" designation. Like any blade, they WILL provide feedback good or bad. That's what I like about blades. I'm a Hogan lover for life! Even though Callaway has decided to kill the once great brand. The best part about these Hogans is that they were forged and assembled in Ft. Worth TX. Nothing, I MEAN NOTHING will beat a well struck blade shot. Especially a Texas-born Hogan blade!"
