The sixth child of nine children, Johannes Coenraad van Hunnik was born in Rotterdam in 1925. The family battled through the 1930s economic depression and the German attack of Rotterdam in May 1940. After being transferred to the small Dutch village of Vledder for forced labor, Coen eventually made his way to Amsterdam. He was hired by the Toonder Studios, where he collaborated with Phiny Dick, the wife of Marten Toonder, on the newspaper cartoon about the gnome "Olle Kapoen."The comic strip first appeared on October 22, 1945, in publications like Amsterdamsch Dagblad, De Kroniek, and De Patriot. Van Hunnik eventually gave way to Richard Klokkers after drawing at least the first story, "Olle Kapoen op avontuur." Algemeen Handelsblad had already published it by that point. Together with Ben van Voorn, Van Hunnik left the Toonder Studios in June 1953. Eelco ten Harmsen van der Beek, the illustrator of the British "Noddy" books and the author of the "Flipje" comic strip, made them a job offer and started his continous career of art.
Van Hunnik's watercolor drawings of Dutch landscapes and scenes are still available in tourist shops today. Prints, postcards, tiles, plates, bowls, cups, and other items feature them. In 2013, the artist released his autobiography, 'Toen wij uit Rotterdam vertrokken.' He died on July 26, 2016.
J C Van Hunnik only signed certain pieces in his lifetime : this is one of them.
