The story of the tragedy is based on the myth of the twin sons of Oedipus and Jocasta, Eteocles and Polyneikis. After the revelation of his horrible deeds, Oedipus left the throne to his two sons. They agreed to rule Thebes alternately. However, when it was Polyneikis' turn to take power, Eteocles did not keep his promise. This angered Polyneikis, who allied with the king of Argos Adrastos and organized a campaign against Thebes. Seven leaders from each of the two opposing troops lined up on either side of the seven gates of the city. Eteocles and Polyneikis ended up facing each other at the seventh gate. This military conflict ended with the victory of the Thebans, but also the death of the two claimants to the throne......
