90 days. Citrullus lanatus. Plant produces huge watermelons as large as 200 pounds. Very flavorful crisp bright red flesh. The rind is striped and resistant to bruising. Impress your neighbors by growing a huge watermelon in your backyard!
Gigantic, delicious watermelons, many over 200 lbs., are oblong and light green stripes. Ready to harvest 90 days after sowing. GARDEN HINTS: For early fruiting and to overcome a short growing season, start seeds in a warm, well-lighted indoor area 3-4 weeks before last spring frost. Before transfer to garden, accustom plants to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered area outside for a week. Grow on plastic mulch to control weeds, conserve soil moisture and protect fruit by keeping it off the ground.
Give your watermelon plants ample space to grow -- at least twenty square feet per plant. The vines of the watermelon can get very unruly, so the more room you leave for them to grow, the happier they'll be. Once you notice your first watermelons growing, keep an eye out for the fastest growing (not necessarily the biggest) fruit on each plant. When you know which watermelon is growing the fastest, pick all of the other fruits off, allowing only one fruit to grow per watermelon plant -- this will allow you to max out on size. Water your plants daily and never let them dry out during fruit the fruit production stage.
