Head Lice Facts: It is important to know the difference between lice eggs and nits to eliminate an infestation. Eggs: Lice eggs are laid close to the scalp, are half the size of a pinhead, oval in shape, gray to brown in color and difficult to see. They may look like dandruff, but they are firmly glued to the hair. Lice eggs cannot be flicked off the hatch in about seven to eight days. Nits are white, empty eggshells. Those located more than one centimeter from the scalp (due to hair growth) have hatched or died. Although lice killing shampoo will kill lice, you must remove the lice eggs and nits by combing them out. A regular comb will not remove them. Lice eggs and nits are attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp with an extremely strong glue-like substance. Nothing has been proven to dissolve the glue. Combing is the only way to remove them. To remove all lice, eggs and nits, the most important tool is a well-designed comb. The Metal Lice Comb is designed for optimal control and ease of use during lice, egg and nit removal. If using with lice killing shampoo, follow instructions carefully. Remove all knots and snarls with an ordinary wide-tooth comb. Separate hair into half-inch strips. Holding the comb with the handle pointed toward you and the side of the handle market "this side toward scalp" up against the head, gently and thoroughly comb through each section of hair, from root to tip. Continue this procedure until the entire head has been combed through and thoroughly checked. Continue to inspect for nits daily for at least two weeks. Reminder: Comb can be used for all hair types. To clean the comb, simply rinse in warm, soapy water and dry with a towel.
