COVER: Like young gentlemen of the time, this eighteenth-century English doll wears a linen shirt, silk vest, and sturdy woolen coat trimmed with metal braid and buttons. It is one of countless toys, hooks, and games that proliferated in eighteenth-century England in response to a growing awareness of children's needs and interests.
