STAR TREK the Motion Picture sees the crew of the Enterprise (Shatner, Nimoy, Kelley, and most of the minor characters) defending Earth in the 23rd century from an alien force that takes on the form of new crewmember Persis Khambatta. It transpires that the alien has in the past consumed an old voyager space probe that was collecting information about the solar system and, frustrated in its desire for companionship -- Earth hasn't responded to its signals -- is threatening Earth with its destruction.

STAR TREK 2: Wrath of Khan is a sequel to the 'Space Seed' TV episode of 1967, with Khan's cosmic renegade blasting back into understandably wrathful action from his prison-planet exile, and metaphorically, with Admiral Kirk discovering the upshot of his youthful wild oats living with lost love Bibi Besch on a threatened planet. Khan's insturment of revenge turns out to be a destructively wielded Genesis device, while his chosen transport is the commandeered USS Reliant.
