5.5" x 8.25", 196 page trade paperback titled WYOMING: RUGGED BUT RIGHT by William F. Bragg, Jr. / Pruett Publishing Company, ISBN # 0-07108-540-2, First Edition, Second Printing, copyright 1979/ The book has tales of the bizarre and unusual, of the wild and woolly that come alive according to the cover notes. Approximately sixty short stories based on colorful characters and events in Wyoming history. This book has the beat of war drums, the thunder of cavalry and the carrying on of native americans and mountain men at the rendezvous. For the novice Wyoming historian, this collection of short stories is a start. William Bragg writes of the unusual happenings of old Wyoming. Some of the selections are authentic with facts verified by Bragg himself (Bragg Jr. was a college professor at Casper College and a legislator in Wyoming and son of writer William Bragg Senior). Others are old tales passed from generation to generation, never having been written down until now. The truthfulness of others is questionable, but these are designated. The eighty-one stories in the book tell of little known adventures of well known men such as Jim Bridger, Butch Cassidy and Joe LaFors. There are also accounts of Tom Horn, Cattle Kate, and Father DeSmet, just to mention a few. One interesting fact of the book is the little known bits and facts of trivia that the author includes such as Wild Bill Hickok was first known as Duck Bill Hickok; early ambulances were often used as overland taxis; and the first WACS were stationed at Fort D.A. Russell in 1890. The book is divided into eight sections: First Citizens; Pathfinders and Pioneers; The Army; Cowboys and Cattlemen; Both Sides of the Law; Colorful Characters; Wheels and Rails; Places. Each of the eight parts has stories that are familiar and important to the history of Wyoming and others that are not so familiar, but of equal importance. The book is complete and in VERY GOOD or better condition with some overall wear. The spine is a little sun faded. The author has signed his name on the title page. |
