Set of 2 EAPG Antique Goofus Glass No. 974 Pine Cones & Panels 10.25" Footed Plates Platters

No. 974 (OMN) AKA: Hemlock Cones

Produced by the Lancaster Glass Company (Lancaster-OH, Operated: 1908-1937) and Introduced ca. 1915

Goofus glass is pressed glass which was decorated with unfired enamel paint in the early 20th century,

manufactured by several prominent glass companies and was relatively cheap. Originally given as premiums at carnivals, Goofus Glass was made from about 1890 to 1920 or so. Because it was cheaply made and cold painted, the paint chips easily. Thus, the  popular name of this glass with unavoidable imperfections became Goofus Glass. It was the first carnival glass, preceding the iridized product known today as carnival glass.

This lovely plates are made of thick heavy pressed glass. They have a sawtooth edge and a panel design. They are decorated with a molded intaglio pattern of pine/hemlock cones along the edge and in the plate centers. Pattern is intaglio style on the base and is smooth on the tops. The painted finish is on the bottom of the plates. The floral pattern stands out in a rich scarlet red and antiqued gold.

These are from the same mold but painted a bit differently. One plate has red pinecones against a gold background, while the other features red & gold pinescones against a clear background.(see photos)

GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION ~ No nicks, chips, cracks, flea bites, or repairs. Does have some of the normal paint flaking/wear, as to be expected on this type of cold painted pieces of this age/type. PLEASE NOTE: One plate has a few excessive manufacturer strawmarks/lines. These are not cracks, but rather a result of the manufacturing process. I wanted to point them out, in case someone is not familiar with these normal manufacturer flaws.

Each measures approx. 10 1/4" D x 2" H.
