This is a story of a young man who graduated from High School and six days later enlisted in the Navy with a career in the Submarine force as his goal. He spent the first eleven years of his enlistment working his way up through the rating structure and qualified for his Silver (Enlisted) dolphins. He then achieved Officer rank and advanced through the ranks and qualified for his Gold (Officer) dolphins. Throughout his thirty-seven years of active service he continued to work toward a college degree while competing for those challenging billets that would help him obtain his goals. His billets included three operating diesel submarines, followed by being a member of the commissioning crews of a new Diesel submarine, two Nuclear Attack submarines, two Nuclear FBM Missile submarines and a catamaran Submarine Rescue ship. He also served on an Ammunition Supply ship and a Submarine Tender. Captain Doyle went to sea with Admiral Rickover on acceptance trials of each of the four nuclear submarines. He was the Bridge Phone Talker on the first two and was the Officer of the Deck on the second two. In Search of Silver and Gold chronicles Captain Doyle’s Navy career and highlights the life career decisions and life threatening events that arose throughout his thirty-seven year adventure!
