I came across this unique item at a recent Estate Sale. It was one of several similar vintage wood carvings that I purchased and I have listed the others as well. This is an iconic Jamaica craft inspired by the Rastafarian culture. The Rastafarians are known for their beautiful wood carvings. They believe that one is born with Rasta inside them, and a true Rasta lives every second of every day in spiritual contact with Jah, Rastafari. For the Rastafarian artist, every sculpture is inspired by Jah.
They are often carved from a reddish-colored hardwood called Lignum Vitae or Cedar Wood; I don't know what type of wood this is. The face is hand carved and stained and measures approximately 9 inches tall by 3 3/4 inches wide and 2 inches thick. At one time (long ago) this carving had a wood worm. There is a tiny hole in the hair above his forehead and a few extremely tiny ones that are hard to find. They have long ago left this sculpture.
I believe this is the face of a Jamaican Rastafarian or Rasta Man with Dread Locks, beard and mustache. It is beautifully carved with an abstract style to it. The back of the piece is unfinished natural wood. It is ready to hang on the wall.
