ABOUT: How did a man born in 1911, starting with nothing but intellect and drive, build such an admirable life? His 75-year marriage brought forth and nurtured a close, loving, highly accomplished family. His business career as a corporate lawyer was demanding and fraught with challenges, which he navigated with wisdom, thoroughness and persistence. And all the while, Eric Newman led the charge to bring his beloved hobby of numismatics out of its own dark ages. Oh yes, he also donated a staggering fortune, the unintended consequences of his collecting passion, to worthy charities... not from his estate as was the norm for philanthropists of his day, but during his own lifetime. I recall in 2005 at the St. Louis Central States Numismatic Society convention, stopping by a booth where Eric Newman happened to be, intending to enjoy a five-minute visit. Hours later, I remained seated there completely rapt and under his spell. He was already 93 years old but he knew and remembered more about almost everything than anyone I've ever met. Wherever the conversation went — usually my own areas of interest — he displayed precise and uniformly accurate knowledge, along with insights I'd never considered. Eric Newman is quite simply a polymath, a lifelong student with insatiable and wide-ranging curiosity. To this day he remains perpetually optimistic, with an unshakable sense of what is right and good. His life and his stories are beyond fascinating. We can all learn from his example. Enjoy! James L.
