The plot features a cop searching for the killers of an old friend. Steven Berkoff is the villain, an art-gallery owner involved in drug and bond smuggling. John Ashton and Judge Reinhold are the LA cops assigned to keeping street-smart Murphy in check, and Lisa Eilbacher is the woman in distress. The film was hugely succesful and led to sequels.

Directed by Martin Brest, it is marginally of interest for the number of directors who have cameo roles including George Lucas, Joe Dante, Martha Coolidge, Arthur Hiller, Ray Harryhausen, Peter Medak, George Schaefer, and John Singleton. The hit song 'Heat is On' by Glenn Frey of the Eagles is used. Also look for cameos from Paul Reiser, Damon Wayans, and Bronson Pinchot.
