The artist:
Mary Guzman:
Mary Guzman is a multidisciplinary artist with a content driven approach. She does not limit herself to any one particular medium as she enjoys the challenge of working in all mediums. She is most fond of watercolor and mixing other mediums to create interesting textures. "Watercolor is bold, free, versatile and best of all forgiving. To the watercolorist accidents are the best thing."
Mary paints with unconventional color compositions as she equates her Latin American Heritage with her love for color and her bold use of it.
"I was born in the United States but every summer my mother would take me to Mexico City, There we traveled and visited many places. It was there I learned to appreciate color. Mexico is saturated with color which is the true spirit of Mexican design. The street and market place was always a feast for my eyes!"
Mary's stylization of natural forms, unusual shapes, and emphatic line translate into abstraction without losing original inspiration. Her unique application of color, line and texture give Mary's paintings a sensuous quality.
Mary earned a Bachelor of Fine Art degree and a Liberal Studies degree with emphasis in education from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). She was a dedicated school teacher for many years until she decided she needed to go back to her true passion which was ART. Since then she has become an active member in many local art associations such as Artist Co-Op 7, Valley Watercolor Society, Collage Artists of America and Women Painters West. She currently instructs at the (AJU) American Jewish University for continuing education.
Mary feels that discovering and learning is an ongoing process till the very end. She continues to take courses and workshops from private institutions and teaches and organizes workshops in the privacy of her studio in Los Angeles, California.
Mary teaches and hosts watercolor and collage and mixed media workshops locally as well as in the intimacy of her spacious studio in Porter Ranch, CA. Mary is also available for private lessons and student critiques.
Mary's studio focuses on creating a friendly, welcoming and happy environment. It has become a meeting place for beginners as well as professional artists to come together and create.
"I have found that congregating as a group is cathartic, it becomes a self exploratory healing process. I like to think that I empower my students through art and they empower me as well."
Many of Mary's beginning students have continued to develop a style all their own. They have become confident enough to exhibit in local shows and galleries in the Los Angeles area and online.
