Measures 9-5/8" X 6-7/16", 137+ pp, edited by Francis Page (pseudonym for SAMUEL ROTH), paperbound book published by Two Worlds Publishing Co. (NY).

From 1873 to 1966, obscene material was largely controlled by the Comstock Act of 1873, which prohibited the circulation of such adjudged material through the mail,  An addendum to the Act also prohibited the circulation of obscene material by railroad or common express.  Bookseller and publisher SAMUEL ROTH, however, attempted several times to thwart the law, in order to present material to selected readers that "crossed the line" (at that time, anyway), but which had a general literary quality, such as ULYSSES by JAMES JOYCE, which Roth had previously introduced to American readers.  CASANOVA JR'S TALES was a short-lived quarterly publication "for one thousand subscribers," which was not sent through the mails, and apparently was also not transported by either railroad or  the common express of 1926.  Today's readers may glance at the material and shrug, since most (of not all) is readily available at public libraries, as well as Barnes & Noble and other booksellers.  But times were different in 1926:  such material was considered obscene; and it wasn't until the U. S. Supreme Court decision in 1957 of ROTH VS. UNITED STATES (yes -- the same SAMUEL ROTH), that the courts decided that the dominant theme of the work as a whole, based upon community standards, decided whether a work was obscene.  The law was tested again by the U. S. Supreme Court, which decided that literature with "redeeming social value" could not be judged obscene, which opened up the floodgates for thousands of books, magazines, movies, etc, which included material of "redeeming social value," but which also included other "suggestive" material, which was now protected by law.

So CASANOVA JR'S TALES from 1926 is a "time machine," of sorts, containing material once considered "risque," "salacious," "spicy," "obscene," "suggestive," and so on; but which today might seem only dated and remotely "naughty."  Judge for yourself by these contents:
