Before Eclipse Comics and Eclipse Books in California, there was Eclipse Enterprises in New York, a little "occasional" publishing company that had not yet made the grand leap into comic book publishing that would soon follow. Eclipse Enterprises was the brainchild of two brothers, Jan and Dean Mullaney, who were probably ribbed regularly by their friends as "those two New York surf kids." But they both had a vision regarding the future of the comic book industry, as no longer being only a playground for children's literature. The comics industry had been slowly evolving away from that style of writing and artwork since at least the 1940s; and, during the 1960s and 1970s, had exploded excitedly with the development of the "underground" press. But the Brothers Mullaney wanted to publish a comics magazine that might gain some respectability on news stands, and yet not be fettered by being branded as "kid" literature -- and ECLIPSE THE MAGAZINE was the result: a glossy monthly of well-written, superbly illustrated cutting edge stories, in a comic book style format, but very definitely for adults, similar to HEAVY METAL magazine, but not limited to fantasy -- in fact, ECLIPSE THE MAGAZINE would publish not only fantasy, but mysteries, science fiction, funny animal, westerns, horror and other genres as well. Eventually, the magazine evolved (devolved?) into a comic book format, entitled ECLIPSE MONTHLY, in which stories that had been serialized in the magazine were now continued inside the comic.
